Harnessing the POWER of High Fat diet and Fasting in Cancer Treatment

Health, November 25, 2023

Lifestyle treatments are not promoted enough in cancer treatment. Growing research is showing the benefits of a high fat diet, fasting, and cold exposure to help compliment existing cancer treatment. Please read and share with anyone you know that is undergoing cancer treatment.

The traditional approach to cancer treatment has primarily focused on surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. However, emerging research has shed light on the potential benefits of dietary interventions in the management of cancer. In particular, high-fat diets and fasting have garnered significant attention for their potential to complement conventional cancer therapies and radically improve treatment outcomes. I wanted to write a brief article to explore the compelling evidence surrounding the use of high-fat diets and fasting as adjunctive strategies in cancer treatment, offering new hope and cost effective avenues for patients and hopefully open the minds of healthcare professionals that work in the oncology field.

High-fat, low-carbohydrate diets, such as the ketogenic diet, have gained prominence in the context of cancer treatment. By significantly reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing the consumption of healthy fats, the ketogenic diet aims to shift the body's metabolism towards utilising ketone bodies for energy. Research suggests that this metabolic state may create an unfavorable environment for cancer cells, which typically rely on glucose for energy to proliferate. Additionally, high-fat diets have been associated with reduced inflammation and improved insulin sensitivity, potentially negatively effecting cancer progression and aiding treatment response.

Intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting have demonstrated remarkable effects on cellular metabolism and overall health. Studies have shown that fasting can lead to changes in hormone levels and cellular processes that may enhance the body's ability to combat cancer. Fasting has been linked to increased autophagy, a process by which cells remove damaged components, potentially inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Moreover, fasting may improve the efficacy and reduce the side effects of certain cancer treatments, offering a promising avenue for improving patient outcomes.

Research has also investigated the potential synergistic effects of high-fat diets and fasting in the context of cancer treatment. It is hypothesized that the metabolic changes induced by both interventions may create an environment that is less conducive to cancer growth and proliferation. Furthermore, the combination of these dietary approaches has shown potential in enhancing the effectiveness of conventional cancer therapies, offering a comprehensive and integrated approach to cancer treatment with no extra financial cost to the patient. Clinical and research neurologist Dr. Matthew Phillips spoke at the Future of Medicine Conference 2023 about his research into using fasting and a low carb, high fat diet to help patients with Grade 4 glioblastoma. Please watch his presentation on YouTube (link below) for more information.

While the potential benefits of high-fat diets and fasting in cancer treatment are promising, it is essential to approach dietary interventions under the guidance of healthcare professionals. Each patient's nutritional needs and medical history must be carefully considered to ensure the safety and appropriateness of these interventions. Moreover, ongoing research is needed to further elucidate the specific mechanisms through which high-fat diets and fasting impact cancer progression and treatment outcomes.

The exploration of high-fat diets and fasting as supportive strategies for cancer treatment represents an exciting frontier in oncology. As our understanding of the complex interplay between metabolism and cancer continues to evolve, these dietary interventions offer new possibilities for improving patient outcomes and quality of life. By integrating the principles of high-fat diets and fasting into the comprehensive care of cancer patients, we may unlock new avenues for personalised and effective cancer treatment. This should bring on a  promising era in the fight against this pervasive disease.

Another lifestyle treatment that can easily be included in a patients regime is cold exposure. Check out my article on the benefits of cold  https://everfit.co.nz/articles/unlocking-the-potential-of-cold-revisting-hypothermia-as-a-promising-frontier-in-cancer-treatment
